Beating resistance by taking action is one of the most important lessons you can learn as a creative or entrepreneur of any kind. Here is a note and writing exercise that should help you hear this message again and take one step to move through it and start fulfilling your creative purpose.
Action is the key to all foundational success ~ Pablo Picasso
Today, I’m sitting in the downtown Santa Fe library writing this note to you.
The above quote by Picasso is the second statement along these lines that has jumped out at me in the past twenty four hours. The other was from a passage that I was read in Yogananda’s book “How to be Happy All the Time” last night before I went to bed. His quote affirmed that we must show up again and again for our true work and do it joyfully, without resistance.
Yogananda is a particularly powerful force in my life. There is just something about his energy, even fifty or so years after his death, that sparks change in me quite naturally.
When I saw the documentary film about his life “Awake” last year, (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) I got up in the middle of the night, effortlessly, and meditated and did yoga in my bed for the next five or six nights. And that is something that would normally be extremely difficult for me.
Another big voice in my head on the topic of Resistance, is of course, Steven Pressfield. He literally wrote the book on beating resistance, called The War of Art, which I often recommend to my coaching clients when they are facing their blocks.
It’s fascinating to me, how, as humans, we need to hear the same things, put in different ways, by different people, over and over again for years to “get” it. Then, one day, it’s like hearing it for the first time.
So, my practice is to say to you, over and over, through all my various anecdotes, different stories and quotes, this one simple message:
Show up! Do the work!
Let go of resistance. Allow. You are meant to offer your gifts by first, giving them to yourself….
Which brings me back to:
Show up! Do the work!
And, whether your work is writing a book, creating a business, healing yourself through writing and therapy, becoming the leader of a cause, or learning the skills to make money as an entrepreneur, my message is always the same.
Ultimately, we all either give in to the voice of collapse or the voice of resilience. It’s more of a struggle for some of us than others, but it’s the same choice for each one of us each every single day.
So….what choice are you making today?
I suggest that you write into your healing, write through your resistance if you’re still experiencing it, let go of your preciousness (writing that advice to myself) and your desire to be special.
Just show up and work. Undertake to do it joyfully. Write yourself whole, then move on to create your bigger dreams.
Assignment for today:
Write a list of topics called: Resistance.
These are the things that stop you, slow you down, weigh you down, leave you in a puddle of self doubt or shame or lie to you. In other words, these are the things that stop you from writing, creating, taking risks, manifesting money or love as well as prevent joy from seeping into the cracks in your soul. Resistance is also attached to the Victim story that we all carry in one way or another…
Pick one of the topics and write your resistance/victim story.
Then do your wisdom writing practice on the topic. What does your wiser self have to say about?
If you feel like you have moved through your resistance, write on one of the following topics. Turn it into a story with a beginning, middle and end:
She remembered her joy when….
When love arrived….
Living into the dream….
