What a bill of good we have been sold in this culture. d. trump and his cronies make billions for raping the earth while so many gifted, wonderful people, who are making life better for all, struggle to to even make a decent living.
For many years, I was one of these people. I did project after project, show after show, that completely changed peoples lives for the better. Yet on a personal level, I continued to struggle to pay my rent and provide for my daughter in the way that I wanted to. Life was a never ending cycle of hope/hopelessness and stress. At the time, I was buying into the very mis-guided and conditioned belief that as an artist/teacher/facilitator/creative I could not make an abundant living while doing what I loved.
One day, a coach changed all of that for me. We were speaking about pricing my services.
She asked me this question, “How much can you bear to receive?”
At first I didn’t know what she meant.
She explained. It’s not about the money itself. That is simply an energy. It’s about how much you can actually bear to receive for your services.
This was news to me, and I asked her to give me an example of what she meant.
She asked me this question: “What’s the highest impact you have had on someone you have worked with?”
The answer came easily to me.
“Well, some years ago, I was working with Veterans for Peace, facilitating a group monologue show. One of the participants, a woman, who had been a nurse in the Vietnam War, came to the group very angry and defiant.”
My coach encouraged me to go on.
“Over the course of the workshop, she revealed that she was not only angry about the cancer she had, due to Agent Orange exposure, she was enraged that she had been raped by two of her commanding officers and forced by these same men, to conduct experiments on some of the Vietnamese people, by injecting them with drugs they were testing for pharmaceutical companies. This all came out in her writing during the workshop and she was able to tell the story in her monologue onstage in front of an audience of about two hundred people.
She died from the cancer, six weeks after the show. No one, including her, had known she was that close to death. A few days before she passed, she got word to me, through hospice, that because of the work I did with her, she was dying free, not angry and tormented. By sharing her story and being deeply heard, she had let go of the burden she had carried for almost forty years.”
My coach pause and said “And how much do you think that experience was worth to her?”
I replied, “One cannot put a price tag on an experience like that.”
She responded, “Exactly.”
From that day forward, I shifted my thinking about money, charging for my services and honoring my self worth. I too, released a burden that I had been carrying for many years, one that kept me in struggle and fear.
Now, I choose to be free around money and abundance and worth. And, I’ll add that it’s an ongoing process.
What can you charge for your services?
I’ll ask you what she asked me “How much can you bear to receive?”
Although we may not have been conditioned to know that as creatives and people who work to support the psyche and souls of others, our work is profoundly valuable, we can change. As a matter of fact, our work is valuable beyond measure. At some point we need to simply claim it. Our work changes consciousness and uplifts lives. I help people complete creative, lifetime projects and coach them into businesses that they love.
This is a big deal and now, I own that. It’s valuable and I deserve to be paid well for offerings of such great power.
Despite the burden of our conditioning, it is not a contradiction to be a creative/facilitator/ artist or other soul based entrepreneur and make a prosperous living.
Get whatever support you need to smash the old, patriarchal thinking that only values what is “hard” in the world.
Allow, allow, allow. Let, let, let.
And by all means, get professional coaching to “fill in the blanks” in the areas where you struggle. For me, it was just a matter of reframing what my heart already knew, however deeply it was buried.
Your soul based services are valuable in ways that you may not even know in this lifetime. So are you. It’s more than ok to charge what you need to feel joyful and free.
Rock the paradigm.
