Dear Story Friends,
I’m hoping this note finds you creating and thriving!
At this particular moment of writing, I’m on a plane somewhere above The Rockies, heading east. Tomorrow evening, I’ll be attending an event with my partner, Cidny Bullens at Maine Magazine in Portland, where he has been featured in a story naming him one of their 50 People of the Year for 2017.
The day after (June 30th) is my fifty-third birthday. Just. Wow.
Every year on my birthday, I write a reflection on my life, and where I’ve landed in this moment in time and space, as well as set my intentions for the year ahead.
So, here goes…
It’s been twenty-two years since I wrote and performed my first solo show and seventeen years since I created a business to support other people in writing and performing their own solo shows, monologues and memoirs.
This work has taken me and my clients all over the U.S., Canada and the UK, to stages at conferences, theaters and festivals. It has magnetically attracted folks to come work with me in Santa Fe, some from as far as Australia, Canada, even Saudi Arabia!
It has put me on stages, speaking at conferences with writers who had been my own early inspirations: Anne Lamott, Julia Cameron and Natalie Goldberg. It has garnered great press for my work and even landed me in Oprah’s Magazine.
I’ve met so many incredible people and worked on so many amazing story based projects that I cannot begin to name them all.
Three years ago, I Imagined that I could see my future stretching out in front of me. I’d continue my life, as it was, in Santa Fe, teaching and leading trainings. At that time, I had expanded my offerings into creating online story based programs as well training others who wanted to create businesses similar to my own.
My daughter was seventeen and ready to launch. She was about to depart for her senior year abroad in Sweden.
My finances had finally stabilized. I was actually prospering. This was a far cry from the early years in a creative business as a single mom with $500 per month income, $4,500 a month in expenses, a two year old and zero idea how to pay the mortgage from month to month.
My great good luck came, not from a pot of gold or a trust fund dropped in my lap. My pot of gold arrived via my passion, knowledge and devotion to the art forms of story.
My pot of gold continued to expand because I was completely willing to do whatever it took to learn all that I had to to run a successful business, even though it was way out of my comfort zone! I now love coaching and teaching other creatives how to do just this. I love helping artists, performers, coaches and writers learn how to make money while offering high value to others through their calling.
I started working professionally as a story coach, long before that became a “thing.” Long before MBA’s started co-opting the art of story as “only” a commodity.
Long before Facebook and Google hired story consultants for everything from teambuilding to marketing. Long before Harvard did its’ now highly quoted research, on the neuro-psychology of story that explains how and why the brain is affected in so many powerful and positive ways.
I came to the art and soul of working with stories from love, and my inner guidance. For my entire life, I longed for the intimacy inherent when we share our deep, heart and soul based stories in a meaningful way. Since I was a child, I intuited that some people knew how to make it through this life, to make meaning and derive purpose from everything they experienced and others didn’t. I wanted to become someone who did.
The magical missing link, the bridge to everything, for me, was contained within the art of stories. And when I say stories, I don’t simply mean words on the paper. I mean, living, breathing, embodied, performed, alive, morphing stories.
To me, this is a key to unlocking the meaning of our very existence. I often think of myself as an undercover shaman. The juiciest part of story work for me has to do with supporting people in transformation. When humans are able to identify, tell, embody, and release their deepest stories, we are all set free. We are then able to re-frame our lives with more elevated, joyful, prosperous, loving stories. We are no longer bound by the karmic tug of trauma and old wounds.
You can likely tell by now, that I am in love with my life and my work.
But getting back to three years ago: I thought my path was pretty well set for the next few decades. How little did I know? And how mistaken of me to underestimate Spirit.
When you help facilitate as much transformation in others as I do, it was pure, straight up denial, for me to expect anything less than everything to change and continue to change.
My partner Cid and I have been traveling all over the country with his solo show, “Somewhere Between, Not an Ordinary Life.” We just did it in Los Angeles to raves. More is being revealed about next steps for the show.
I am directing three new solo shows in Santa Fe at The Railyard Performance Space in the coming six months with amazing clients and friends, Suzanne Armistead (She Moves Like Water), Analesa Berg (The 23rd Letter) and Lilly Bright (American Standard). Each is working with me to premier their solo shows in Santa Fe, before taking them to their hometowns of Austin, New Jersey and Los Angeles, respectively.
In November, I will be working at a leadership conference in Iowa with one of my all time favorite humans on the planet, food activist and the creator of the Soul Food Monologues, LaDonna Redmond. She has facilitated this work extensively, primarily at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. We met when she walked into my “Storytelling for a New World” workshop at the Bioneers Confernece in 2007 and became immediate friends. We will be working at the upcoming conference together, co-directing a monologue show. I will also be directing her own solo show, which is serving at the conference in lieu of a keynote.
On Monday, I’m heading to a rustic cabin on a beautiful cabin off the coast of Maine, with Cid, to hunker down and complete my own solo show, “Brandywine Street Jesus” which will be performed in the coming six-ten months (Date TBA) It will be the first chapter of my Seven Year Staged Memoir, “A Reckoning of Innocence.”
My love, Cid lives in Maine. I live in Santa Fe. We have been doing the long distance dance for almost two years now.
After twenty-six years in Santa Fe, land of my Soul, I am returning back to my own family’s roots; New England for at least half of every year.
Expansion unfolds. As of this coming November, I will now have offices in both Portland, Maine and Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as online worldwide.
Here is a Facebook Post I wrote this morning. This is where my head and heart have landed, at the precipice of my fifty third year. I invite you to join me here. It’s a startlingly beautiful place to be.
Last night, a bright blue dragonfly arrived, flying in zig zags above my lawn. This morning, four lizards and a dead corn snake appeared on my walk. The animal realm has become my mentor and close ally.
I grew up on eighty acres of wooded land in Maryland with a pond and stream. I began this life as an introverted only child, isolated from other children.
But, my dogs and my ducks, my cat and the rabbits, the lizards and the toads, were my friends.
I’ve returned in the last few years to where I began, but now, without the isolation. Now, love holds me in all realms.
This morning, when I saw the dead snake in the road, I wept. I’ve been opening to heal my phobia around snakes for several years. This morning, I was able to slow down enough to touch the preciousness of that small snakes life, cut short, crossing a country road.
As I posted, a live bull snake tried to enter my home the other day and I was not afraid. In my mind, I connected with it and asked it to peacefully depart. It did.
I’ve come home to myself. My heart is open and I’m riding on the wings of faith.
Today, I fly to Maine to be with Cid for a month. Friday, I turn fifty-three.
I am so grateful that I can experience the wholeness of this broken world and the sacredness of all things, in and out of form. No regrets for any aspect of the journey that brought me to this moment.
Loving each one of you.
